Skin Care For Your Man

More men are recognizing that it is time to pay attention to using the appropriate skin care products for their skin type or their skin condition. No longer is it about using their wife’s or girlfriends facial products, but they still have some ways to go. Men still need HELP!! As a licensed esthetician, I often ask my male clients what do they use on their skin and nine times out of ten I get umm…whatever is in the bathroom, whatever my lady uses or umm…I don’t know. I find that most men are not interested in what they use on their skin because they do not understand the significance of good skin care. It is not until their skin takes a turn for the worse that they become more interested in taking better care of their skin.

Well ladies, this is where we come in. You don’t want to overwhelm your man with too many products because he will definitely not use them all. The idea is to get him started on a simple skin care regimen that will produce great results. Below are some easy pointers to assist your man with selecting products for better looking skin.

The Basics

Cleansers

You want to get a product that is gentle, non-drying and sodium lauryl sulfate-free.
Moisten fingertips, apply pea-sized drop of cleanser then massage in circular motion on face and neck. Work into lather and then rinse.
Use morning and evening.

Exfoliants

You want to get a product that is mild and non irritating. I suggest getting an exfoliant with smooth beads so that it does not cause micro-lacerations to the skin.
After cleansing, apply a quarter size to face and neck, then massage in circular motions avoiding the eye area. Continue to massage for about one minute then rinse thoroughly with warm water. This helps to remove dead skin from the surface to reveal newer, smoother skin.
Use once a week.

Moisturizers

You want to get a product that is lightweight, hydrates the skin and protects from sun exposure.
After cleansing/exfoliating apply a dime size amount, then massage moisturizer gently until absorbed.
Use daily.

Lips

You want to get a product that protects the lips from the sun and keeps them smooth.

Please note that this is a basic skin care guideline. If your man has a skin condition that needs more than the basics schedule an appointment for him to see a skin care specialist for specialized treatment.

Dear Smucci.

Here is my version of a lip…it’s more pepto bismal but it is still FIRE you hear me? First I take a pencil in some acid washed bubble gum pink and I line my lips 30times it’s all about DEFINITION and then I fill in with lead…oops I mean pencil and layer with lipstick. Then I do it again.

It’s not right until I have trout pout then im ret to go…. The problem is ..(yes, there is a problem even though its tres gorgeous) is that it never seems to come off. When I wash my face at night I still feel like I have lipstick on. My friend said it looks like pink pancake mix (whose jealous?) but I have to admit it’s heavy.

But beauty costs..um don’t it?

P.S. I forgot to mention that I taught my best friend how to apply her lipstick as well. What do you think?

Pink Pancake Lips

Dear Pink Pancake Lips,

Wow! Where do I begin? Okay please say this with me B-L-E-N-D you need to BLEND the liner. It is the key to flawless lips. There are a few very wrong things going on here. For starters, you do not need to line your lips 30 times. I’m not too sure why you are doing this, but it is totally not correct. If you are lining your lips to intensify the color or to define the shape of your lips you may want to consider using a lip pencil in one to two shades deeper than your lipgloss. You can also try using a richly pigmented pencil in the same color as your lipgloss. It appears to me that you need some guidance with your Lip Liner application. Below you will find some easy tips to achieve well-blended fabulous lips.

Lip Pencil Application

1. Start by selecting a color that matches the lipstick or one shade deeper than lipgloss.

2. Begin lining the top lip from the middle and extend the line across on both sides.

3. Apply the line across the bottom lip.

4. Fill in the middle of the lip lightly with pencil and blend.

5. Use your clean finger or the edge of a makeup sponge to wipe away anything outside the natural lip line.

6. Now you are ready to apply your favorite lip color. Press lips together to blend color and your done.

How to Achieve Gorgeous Neutral Lips

I absolutely love neutral lip colors. It gives such a beautiful balanced look when worn with medium to dark eyeshadow and sun-kissed blushed cheeks. However, for the minimalist, applying the perfect neutral lip color with light mascara can look just as Hot!! Below is a quick and easy guide to help you find and achieve your perfect Smucci pout.

Instructions

Identify the color of your natural lip. It will usually fall under these four categories: pale, medium, dark and two-toned.
After identifying your natural lip color, choose a lip gloss that is one to two shades deeper in tone.
Moisturize your lips with a lip balm (whichever brand you prefer). Make sure that you apply a thin layer to the lips, just enough so that your lips feel soft and moist.
Line Lips with a lip pencil one shade deeper than the lip color for slight contrast and definition. For those that are heavy-handed, slant lip pencil sideways so that less product is applied to the lips.
Apply your favorite Smucci gloss and blend. Depending on your preference, you can use a lip brush for a more defined look , your finger or you can apply color straight from the tube to your lips.
